29 Nov 2009 | The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad & Tobago on 29 November produced this 'statement on Commonwealth action on non-communicable diseases'. It affirms a commitment among the countries to address NCDs and increase their ability ‘to respond to this emerging health crisis’, and also highlighted a need for wider action on NCDs as an important part of development, particularly for discussion on their inclusion in the Millennium Development Goal indicators.

13 Oct 2009 | 'How to engage inactive communities in physical activity: top tips from the BHFNC 8th Annual Conference' is a booklet of practical ‘tips’. The ideas presented were put forward by delegates and the workshop facilitators during the workshop discussions at the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health annual conference 2008. It includes generic tips for people working across groups, and also specific tips for engaging key target groups, e.g. people with disabilities, girls and young women, older adults, people with mental ill-health, black and minority ethnic communities and socially deprived communities.

01 Oct 2009 | 'Time to act: The global emergency on non-communicable diseases' is released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), World Heart Federation (WHF) and International Union Against Cancer (UICC). It is the outcome of a joint event held during the 62nd World Health Assembly and calls on the international community to help achieve three specific goals: 1) Donor and funding agency support for essential NCD medicines; 2) An NCD progress indicator in the Millennium Development Goals; and 3) A UN General Assembly Special Session on NCDs. 30 Jun 2009 | The inaugural international Healthy Parks Healthy People Congress 2010 will be held in Melbourne from 11 to 16 April 2010, and the call for proposals is now open (see attached, and www.healthyparkshealthypeoplecongress.org). Parks Victoria will host the event, a unique opportunity to bring together delegates from all relevant sectors (i.e. planning, community development, physical and mental health, tourism, climate change, education, recreation, ecology and park management) to explore how we can take better advantage of the way nature significantly contributes to our wellbeing and broader societal benefits.

14 Jun 2009 | Six of the world’s foremost health agencies have announced the formation of a landmark alliance to collaborate in the critical battle against chronic, non-communicable diseases. The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (Alliance) is being created to support clear priorities for a coordinated research effort that will address this growing health crisis, now reaching world epidemic proportions. Work of the Alliance will focus in particular on the needs of low- and middle- income countries, and on those of low income populations of more developed countries.
